Before Buying a Large Item Checklist

Use this before ordering furniture, appliances, exercise equipment, fixtures or any bulky product.

Define the destination

Identify the exact room, opening, alcove or installation position.Measure usable width, height and depth at more than one point.Note sloped floors, uneven walls, trim, baseboards, radiators and fixed obstacles.Record space needed to open doors, drawers, lids and reclining parts.Check whether people can still walk around and use the item comfortably.

Measure the item

Find model-specific width, height and depth rather than relying on a category label.Identify the rigid frame dimensions and the largest non-removable shape.Separate product dimensions from packaged dimensions.Note handles, hinges, feet, controls, hoses, vents and other projections.Confirm which parts can be removed safely and reattached.

Check the route

Measure every doorway by clear opening, not nominal door size.Measure halls, corners, stairs, landings and ceiling height.Check lift/elevator door and cabin dimensions where relevant.Allow room to tilt, pivot and rotate the item.Ask who is responsible if delivery cannot be completed.

Verify and protect the purchase

Compare retailer, manufacturer and installation-manual dimensions.Save dated screenshots of the listing and specifications.Read return, restocking, delivery-refusal and non-returnable terms.Plan to unpack, inspect and measure during the return period.Choose a measurement buffer appropriate to the cost of failure.
