Plain-language definitions used throughout Will It Fit?

Actual dimensions
Measurements taken from the physical item itself, as opposed to a listing, drawing or nominal size.
Appliance envelope
The total space occupied by the appliance body plus relevant handles, hinges, feet, connections and required clearances.
Body dimensions
The basic physical width, height and depth of the product, which may exclude projections or operating space.
Clear opening
The unobstructed gap available for an item to pass through when a door, gate or panel is in its usable position.
Clearance
Space intentionally left around an item for ventilation, operation, access, safety, handling or maintenance.
Delivery path
The complete route from the delivery vehicle or building entrance to the item’s final position.
Diagonal
A corner-to-corner measurement. It can help screen orientations but does not prove that a three-dimensional item can pivot through a route.
Fit buffer
An extra allowance chosen for uncertainty, handling and variation. It is separate from required installation clearance.
Installation dimensions
The space required to install and use a product, often larger than its body dimensions.
Nominal size
A category or trade label that may not equal the product’s exact measured size.
Operating clearance
Space required to open doors, drawers, lids, recliners or moving parts and to use the item.
Packaged dimensions
The dimensions of the shipping carton, crate or protective packaging rather than the bare product.
Pivot space
The open area required to rotate or change the orientation of a large item.
Projection
A handle, hinge, control, foot, bracket, hose, cord or other feature extending beyond the main body.
Route fit
Whether an item can pass through every checkpoint between its starting point and final location.
Room fit
Whether an item can occupy and function in its intended room after it arrives.
Service clearance
Space needed for connection, inspection, maintenance or repair.
Smallest checkpoint
The most restrictive point on a route after all relevant dimensions and turning conditions are considered.
Source confidence
A practical assessment of how specific, current, consistent and verifiable a dimensional source appears.
Turning space
The open area required to rotate or change an item’s orientation; irregular furniture does not have one universally reliable radius.
