Measure the cabinet opening in several places
Measure width at the front and back and height on both sides. Floors, walls and cabinets are not always square. Use the smallest valid measurement as the controlling opening.
Record countertop overhang, baseboard, wall trim and any cabinet lip that narrows usable space.
Build the installation envelope
Start with exact model body dimensions, then add clearances stated in its instructions. Include rear space for plugs, water lines or coils and top or side ventilation where required.

Measure width near the floor, at counter height and near the top. Measure height at the left, centre and right, and depth from the most restrictive rear obstruction rather than from an imaginary flat wall. Baseboards, water valves, outlets, trim and uneven flooring can reduce the usable envelope. Use the smallest credible reading for the first screening.
Next separate refrigerator body dimensions from the installed envelope. Handles, hinges, doors, levelling feet and rear connections can extend beyond the cabinet. Manufacturer-required side, top and rear clearances must be added to the body size; they are not optional “extra buffer.”
Plan door operation and daily use
A refrigerator that slides into an alcove may still be unusable if a door strikes a wall, island or adjacent cabinet. Check the angle needed to remove drawers and bins, not merely the angle needed to reach food. French-door and side-by-side layouts can require different side space. Also check whether a bottom freezer drawer can open without blocking the main walkway.
Mark the proposed front edge with removable tape. This shows how far the doors and handles project beyond surrounding counters and whether the appliance creates a pinch point. Include comfortable standing space for loading groceries and cleaning.
Verify delivery and services
Measure the packaged appliance for delivery separately from the bare appliance for installation. The route may involve a porch, narrow entry, stair, lift/elevator or sharp kitchen turn. Confirm whether doors or handles may be removed by the delivery team and whether doing so changes warranty or service requirements.
Locate the outlet, water connection and shutoff before delivery. Hoses and plugs need bending space and must not be crushed. Use the exact model’s installation instructions and a qualified installer where plumbing, electrical work or cabinetry changes are involved.
