Separate the mattress from the bed frame
Mattresses and frames behave differently during delivery. A foam mattress shipped compressed may enter easily but cannot necessarily be recompressed for a later move. A traditional mattress may flex slightly, while a rigid platform, headboard, adjustable base or storage-bed section may not. Measure and plan each component independently.
Record the largest packaged piece for delivery and the assembled footprint for room use. Headboards can be wider than the mattress, and upholstered rails or drawers can add depth. Adjustable bases, split foundations and mechanical beds may have heavy modules and electrical components requiring particular handling.
Check stairs and ceiling transitions
A mattress carried vertically may need enough ceiling height at the bottom and top of stairs to change angle. Measure stair width between the handrail and opposite wall, the vertical space above nosings, and the landing area. Tight bends can stop a rigid headboard even when the mattress bends through.
Plan usable room space
Mark the complete bed footprint, not just mattress size. Include room for doors, drawers, wardrobes, radiators and walking paths. A storage bed needs clearance to open drawers or lift the platform. A bed near a wall may fit physically while making bedding, cleaning or emergency exit difficult.
When selecting a new size, confirm both route fit and room function before ordering. Nominal mattress labels are useful categories, but actual frame and mattress dimensions vary by manufacturer and country.
